Choosing a Vacation Rental

Planning a vacation can be challenging, especially when it comes to deciding where to stay. Even if you’re all set on getting a vacation rental, it doesn’t really stop there. Considering countless properties and locations, choosing can be daunting. But there are considerations that can help you choose right without losing your sanity.

Select a popular destination.

If ou want to save some money, choose a place where there are several vacation rentals – that means prices are competitive.

Compare different properties.

The benefits of making comparisons are obvious. Best of all, you can do that conveniently online!. Those comparison tools on the Internet sure are useful. Very importantly, never sign any paperwork until after you have comparison-shopped.

Hold the cash until you’ve signed the paperwork.

Make sure that your rental paperwork is signed before you send any money for vacation rentals.

Know who you’re dealing with.

Ask them for references and know their background. With most vacation rentals being run by professional agents, you should get all the pertinent details in the paperwork. Even if you’re dealing directly with the homeowner, it’s still important that you sign a lease.

Examine the fine print.

Just in case you have to leave early, do they have a cancellation policy? Do they say when you’ll get your deposit back if you do cancel?

Know what the contract includes.

Though most contracts for vacation rentals will state, everything included” or “all in,” make sure there are no secret surcharges. If Internet and cable are covered, does that mean high-speed Internet or WiFi? Is cable basic or premium? If they say electricity is included, is there a maximum? If the house has a pool, who’s paing to heat it (this can get expensive during winter)? These are the small things about vacation rentals that usually end up overlooked, yet they can make a huge difference in your final overall expenses.

Consider the people you’re traveling with.

If you’re traveling with kids, check the bed configurations. If the room only has one king-sized bed, that can spell trouble. Also make sure you examine pictures of the house. If you have some crayon-crazy toddlers coming, forget that house with a stunningly fancy interior design.+ If you’re traveling with your beloved Great Dane, make sure she’s not in excess of the size limit for pets.

Know whom to call for emergencies.

During emergencies, such as an electrical blackout or the stove not working, make sure there’s someone you can call. The contract should also indicate a timeframe for fixing the issue.
